AC Charge Controls

DC Charging Cable

Lower power range - CCS C-Line: For the private to semi-public sector, such as carports, company parking lots, restaurants, retail and public parking garages, the CSS Type 1 and CSS Type 2 charging standards are used. The charging power (nominal operation) here is 40 kW...80 kW. The charging cables do not have a replaceable mating face and are not cooled.
Medium power range: For semi-public to public areas, such as company parking lots, restaurants, retail stores, public parking garages and gas stations, the CSS Type 1, CSS Type 2 and GB/T charging standards are used. The charging power (nominal mode) here is 80 kW...250 kW. In boost mode, it can be increased to 500 kW. The charging cables have a replaceable mating face and are not cooled.
Upper Power Range - High Power Charging (HPC): For the public sector, such as HPC fast charging parks, gas stations and rest areas on highways and freeways, one uses the CSS Type 1 and CSS Type 2 charging standards. The charging power (nominal operation) here is 400 kW...500 kW. The charging cables have a replaceable plug-in face and are cooled by a liquid.

Phoenix Contact's charging management meets the increasing demand for charging options. Due to the increasing number of electric vehicles that need to be charged, the infrastructure must also grow in parallel. Larger parking areas such as parking garages or parking lots are therefore increasingly equipped with charging columns.

This constant expansion of the infrastructure poses a major challenge to the planners of such charging parks. It is important to be able to charge as many vehicles as possible simultaneously with the given connection. The scalable software solution from Phoenix Contact is used for this purpose.

AC charging sockets for charging stations and wallboxes

The infrastructure charging sockets for Mode 3 charging cables are mounted in AC charging columns and wallboxes. Mode 3 charging takes place via single-phase and three-phase charging cables. The charging process is indicated by colored LED displays. Among other features, these sockets are particularly characterized by silver-plated power and signal contacts, high-precision temperature monitoring and integrated interlocking. Production is in accordance with automotive standard IATF 16949 and ISO 9001.

Type 1* : This variant is used in the North American, South Korean and Japanese regions. The charging power is 5 kW...12 kW and the number of phases is 1-phase. This variant also offers a locking option with shackle lock. Certifications for this type are VDE, CB, UL and PSE.
Tpye 2* : This variant is used in the European, Australian, Indian, Arab and South African regions, among others. The charging power is 5 kW...26.6 kW and the number of phases is 1- or 3-phase. Certifications for this type are VDE and CB.
Type GB/T* :This variant is used in the Chinese regions. The charging power is 4.4 kW...24.4 kW and the number of phases is 1- or 3-phase. This variant also offers a locking option with shackle lock. Certification for this type is CQC.

AC charging cable CHARX connect eco

Compared to the current Mode 3 charging cables, the new "CHARX connect eco" charging cable family impresses with its lower weight due to reduced material usage and more compact dimensions. At market launch, the charging cables are available in the Type 2 charging standard in four power classes from 3.7 to 22kW. Both the variant with open cable end for fixed connection and the mobile variant are available.

The new products comply with the IATF 16949 standard and are reliably protected against water ingress in accordance with IP67. On request, the charging plugs are available with customer logo.

6. Overvoltage protection

PHOENIX Contact offers under the series "Charx protect" technology to protect the charging station and electric vehicles from lightning and overvoltages. Thus, climatic or technical disturbances cannot cause any damage.

Advantages:

"CHARX protect" protects the complex and sensitive technology on the electric vehicle and the charging infrastructure. In both areas, the aim is to ensure a long service life and an uninterrupted charging process.

The protective concept consists of 3 parts:

Type 1+2 combination arresters and type 2 arresters for the power supply protect the feed-in against dangerous overvoltages caused by lightning strikes and switching operations from the mains.
With type 3 surge arresters, you ensure permanent functioning of the numerous sensitive components within your charging station.
The communication components are usually connected via Ethernet and should also be protected.

Vehicle charging sockets

The universal vehicle charging sockets enable AC and DC charging of electric cars and e-commercial vehicles. The vehicle can be charged permanently with 250 kW, temporarily even up to 500 kW. The standards correspond to the charging cables CSS Type 1, CSS Type 2 and GB/T and of course all AC variants.

8. DC Power Electronics

The economic operation of your DC charging infrastructure for fast charging is enabled by the highly efficient CHARX power electronics. Whether charging modules in the charging pole or entire system cabinets for charging parks in the megawatt range, the CHARX power system offers solutions for DC charging with high voltages and currents up to High Power Charging (HPC).

Flexible design of charging systems

30 kW power modules are available as AC/DC and DC/DC converters. One can install them directly into the charging pole, which then provides a stable power supply for charging the electric vehicles. The module complies with 19" standard dimension, as well as push-lock and T-LOX quick connection technology.

For larger systems such as charging parks, the 87.5 kW power module is used. This is installed in the system cabinet via rack mounting. In total, the cabinet can be brought up to a charging power of 350 kW.

Phoenix Contact has developed the modular CHARX system for fast and economical installation of fast charging infrastructures in a standardized 19-inch format. It consists of several modules for distribution, conversion and control of the charging current, which can be combined as required. The system includes a distribution module to supply AC mains power to all components, up to five power modules to convert to DC power, and a control module to monitor the charging process. The modular design reduces the complexity of the DC charging station and accelerates and optimizes the charging station manufacturer's processes.
